Abstract: In the late 1990s, the Environmental Protection Agency designated acid mine drainage (AMD) as the biggest environmental problem in coal mining regions of the US. Historian Dr. T. A. Comp founded a non-profit partnership organization with the intention of calling attention to the issue and the innovative art and science solution. This article features the AMD&ART project in Vintondale PA. Design Coalition Institute's Executive Director participated as a facilitator for the citizen participation and program evaluation process. She was interviewed for this article.
