'The Village' Cohousing ~ the urban context

Early Planning | Project Photos | Urban Context | Site | Articles

Madison, Wisconsin

small site planThe 3/4 acre site comprises half a city block, and has about a 6 foot difference in elevation from Mound Street to St. James Court. By raising the central courtyard grade higher, we were able to provide parking below the Common House (top center building) and the Townhouses (upper left corner of the site).

The Village complex includes17 dwelling units varying from one to four bedrooms in size. Two of the 5 existing houses, was refurbished; the Common House, a townhouse duplex and a multi-unit condo building are all new construction

The site parking is located on the periphery, with the heart of the site strictly for pedestrians. The primary vehicular access is from St. James Court, an alley-like city street.

Two of the existing old houses were refurbished, the turn-of-the-century wood frame 124 South Mills (left) and the brick 120 South Mills (right), built in the 1920's.

To better integrate the new construction with the old houses, we chose similar materials, using the brick color and texture from 120 and the siding type from 124.
