Glass Nickel Pizza Company

Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Something old, something new...

The design for the new Glass Nickel Pizza Company exterior borrows elements from their old building. The new polychrome stone-and-brick front entrance recalls their current building in an early 20th century block face. They will be leaving it behind when the block is demolished to make way for a new project in the Schenk-Atwood neighborhood.

The two story brick structure will have the pizza restraint and kitchen on the ground level, along with a wheelchair accessible living unit. The second floor has eight new apartments, each with with it's own balcony. Construction will begin in Summer 2001.

East side neighbors and planners have been very active in recent years. Their work -- whether it's on the reconstruction of East Washington Avenue, the Census Tract 20 Plan, the BUILD (Better Urban Infill Land Development) project or the the Schenk-Atwood Master Plan -- emphasizes 'new urbanism' concepts of mixed use and traffic calming to improve the livability and economic health of the district.

This is first project to be proposed for the west end of the BUILD study area. The Glass Nickel owners and Design Coalition worked closely with City staff to ensure that this project will extend the new planning concepts and spur more development of equal quality.

The Glass Nickel project also models the design guidelines of the Schenk-Atwood Master Plan.
