The Taylor family house recycles more than weathered siding boards from a red Wisconsin barn. More than the old copper roofing from Frank Lloyd Wright's nearby Unitarian Church, reused for siding. More than the century-old Douglas Fir, crafted from the timbers of a Chicago warehouse into new flooring, kitchen cabinets and the beam over the entry. It recycles a whole house.
Completed last year, this rebuilt house for a gourmet chef and his young family is lively, colorful and energy efficient. It adds a third floor and two new bedrooms to the original small house. Plus a passive solar sunspace, decks in carefully shielded micro-climates, plenty of natural light and cross-ventilation, and lots of insulation (cellulose made from recycled newspapers, of course).
