Teaching Bio-Dynamic Farming

The Michael Fields Agricultural Institute was created to teach farmers bio-dynamic growing methods. We are working to help them remodel the White Barn for the interns who join the Institute each growing season, to live on the grounds and work in the fields and gardens. The lower level where milk cows used to stand will be made into dormitory space; the lofty hay mow above will house office space and a large gathering and performance space.

Visit the Michael Fields Insitute website or contact them at mfai@michaelfieldsaginst.org or 414/ 642-2661 (fax)

The Rudolf Steiner Foundation provided financial support for the building project.

Many Wisconsin barns built in the 1800's are framed with heavy timbers. This one however was built in sections, likely in the 1930's to 1950's, with a sawn wood truss type of roof framing. A great deal of creative structural re-working will be needed to restore the wind-racked span
