Significant factors in the generation of waste in this division include wood rejects and offcuts, corrugated cardboard, packing materials, and protecting installed work.
Use locally available hardwoods, avoiding tropical or endangered woods especially. According to the project there may be salvageable wood trim; if so, specify its reuse.
Try to use solid wood rather than plywood when possible. Hardwood plywood is bonded with urea formaldehyde adhesives. The back stamp of wall panels should contain the statement: "Formaldehyde emission 0.2ppm conforms to HUD requirements". (This is about 20 times the threshold level of offgassing that will affect people with chemical sensitivities.) If used, take special steps to seal all sides and edges.
There are exterior trim products on the market essentially made of OSB-type material, using wood fiber more efficiently, although without post-consumer recycled materials. A concern is their long-term reliability, especially in resisting degradation from water. They have been tested for only a short time before being put on the market.
