Most organic asphalt shingles contain recycled waste paper in their base. Some contain recycled mineral slag for their surface. The use of longer warranteed shingles increases their life span, and thereby reduces disposal.
In new construction scrap shingles compromise a small part of the site waste. Any unused portion can be turned over to the Owner for use in maintenance and repair.
In demolition and renovation there is no easy recycling possible. If there is a program to recycle or salvage other demolition material, asphalt shingles should not be mixed with these.
