For clients with chemical sensitiveities the use of well-sealed sheet vapor barriers is recommended to contain fibers and/or offgassing from insulation and other materials used in wall and ceiling construction. Use the cross-laminated sheeting with no talcum.
SECTION 07190 VAPOR RETARDER
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
Extent of Vapor Barriers is shown on drawings.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 VAPOR BARRIER
Normal sheet poly has a talcum coating to prevent it sticking together in its packaging or roll. This can be a health hazard, mostly to workers: talc has formaldehyde!
6 mil carbonated polyethylene film rated at 0.1 perms or less.
Cross-laminated poly sheeting: much superior puncture resistance, higher tensile strength, lower permeability, UV stabilizer, and no talcum.
tu-tuf®3 cross-laminated polyethylene sheeting by Sto-Cote Products, Inc. (P.O. Drawer 310, Richmond, IL 60071, 800-435-2621).
Cross-laminated poly sheeting for under concrete or on foundation wall, below grade for improved damproofing:
tu-tuf®4 cross-laminated polyethylene sheeting by Sto-Cote Products, Inc. (P.O. Drawer 310, Richmond, IL 60071, 800-435-2621), rated 0.04 perms or less.
or for under concrete slabs
Moistop sheeting by Fortifiber Corp. (19342 Lake Montcalm R.d, Howard City, MI
(800) 442-2587)
2.02 SEALANT
High quality acoustical sealant.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION
Take care to produce a tight continuous vapor barrier. Attention to detail is essential. Note special conditions where vapor barrier wraps around other materials for continuity, such as at edge of subfloor, etc. Lap and seal all seams with acoustical sealant. Caulk and staple vapor barrier to windows and frames, and to subfloor. Use minimum number of mechanical fasteners necessary. Repair holes and tears with sealing tape immediately prior to concealment. Caulk all exterior wall electrical boxes completely using foam outlet sealers for a compression fit.
Before installing vapor barrier over ground in crawl space, verify that area is clear of building debris and other organic material.
Notify Architect for inspection of vapor barrier installation prior to concealment.
