Significant factors in the generation of waste in this division include wood rejects and offcuts.
Vinyl (PVC) siding is commonly used and available from many manufacturers and in varying qualities (finish, resistance to sagging over time, refinement of trim pieces, color selection). Its attraction is lower cost and the promise of little maintenance. PVC is difficult to recycle and none contains post-consumer vinyl–it is basically not recyclable. The manufacture of the resin for PVC products causes excessive environmental degradation.
Hardboard siding products have shown poor long-term resistance to water damage.

There are siding products on the market essentially made of OSB-type material, sometimes with coated or wood veneer finish. They use wood fiber more efficiently, although without post-consumer recycled materials. A concern is their long-term reliability, especially in resisting degradation from water. They have been tested for only a short time before being put on the market.

SECTION 07460 — WOOD SIDING

PART 1 — GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

Extent of siding work is shown on drawings and includes siding and miscellaneous accessories required for a complete and finished job.

1.02 STANDARDS

Comply with PS 20, American Softwood Lumber Standard and the grading rules of:
Western Wood Products Association (WWPA),
West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB), or
(Canadian) National Lumber Grades Authority (NLGA).

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

Store siding materials at to site to prevent warping and weather damage, elevating above ground on level blocking and covering to permit adequate ventilation. Stack on evenly spaced vertically aligned stickers in an area to allow good air flow through the stack. Allow the siding to acclimated for a week to ten days prior to installation.

1.02 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS

Underlayment: ASTM D 226 felt underlayment, 15 lb.
Fasteners: High tensile strength aluminum splitless, [straight][ring][spiral] shank nails designed for siding installation. Follow WWPA recommendations for sizes and location.
Accessories: Provide metal outside corners for bevel siding
Sealants: See Section 07900

PART 3 — EXECUTION

3.01 PREFINISHING

Prime or prefinish siding on all sides before installation.

3.02 INSTALLATION

Apply one layer of felt horizontally over entire surface, lapping succeeding courses 2" min. If felt has become wet before of after installation, allow surfaces to dry before the wood siding is applied.

Apply starter strip along bottom edge of sill and necessary wood inside corners and trim. Install first course of siding with lower edge at least 1/8" below starter strip and subsequent courses lapped 1" over course below, nailing at each stud. Butt joints only at stud locations nailing top and bottom on each side and staggering joints at each course. Leave slight gap at trim and corners, and caulk.
