Materials used in carpets are not necessarily unhealthy, but many chemicals are introduce, making carpet problematic for many people. It does have high embodied energy costs and use petrochemical products.
Waste carpet recycling is evolving. Techniques vary according to the type of fiber and backing material and local recycling or collection facilities.
There are manufacturers of carpet with recycled PET plastic fibers, one in Wisconsin: Talisman Mills inc. 6000 Executive Dr., Mequon, WI 53092, (800) 482-5466.
Consider choosing a natural fiber carpet or another type of flooring.

Preplan installation for uniform direction of pattern and lay of pile, and proper sequencing with other work. Locate seams properly, centered under doors and without seams in direction of traffic at doorways and similar traffic patterns. Extend carpet under removable obstructions and into closets and alcoves.

3.02 INSTALLATION

If an underlayment is used, follow manufacturer's recommended installation and preparation procedures.
