SECTION 09550 — WOOD FLOORING REFINISHING

PART 1 — GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

Extent of work shown on Drawings, and includes sanding and refinishing of wood strip flooring, with patching as required.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

Submit product information, including Material Safety Data Sheets, for all finishing materials.

1.03 HANDLING

Do not proceed with wood floor work or delivery of materials until building is enclosed and humidity has stabilized at the approximate level anticipated for sustained occupancy. Deliver wood flooring in advance of installation as recommended by manufacturer, but not less than 7 days before installation, in order to permit natural adjustment of moisture content. Open packages which are sealed against moisture penetration.

Properly handle and store floor patching material to avoid damage and excessive moisture absorption.

PART 3 — EXECUTION

3.01 PATCHING INSTALLATION

Meet with Architect prior to beginning patching and refinishing work to examine the flooring and determine the extent of patching and repair required.

Replace individual flooring boards and areas of flooring that are cracked, ‘toothing-in’ new work with the existing. Renail loose flooring as required, through the face with countersunk threaded nails; patch countersink with hardening type filler before refinishing.

Wherever wood flooring abuts a different type of flooring material, install a tongue and groove finish strip parallel to the edge of the adjacent flooring continuous for the entire joint. Bevel if necessary due to a difference in adjacent flooring height.

Comply with flooring manufacturer's instructions and recommendations for preparation of substrates to receive wood flooring. Install over rosin paper; do not use asphalt impregnated building paper. Nail strip flooring to subflooring in accordance with flooring manufacturer's recommendations.

3.02 REFINISHING

After installation, machine sand surface of wood flooring smooth, using coarse, medium and fine (No. 00) paper. Sand until no offsets or observable imperfections, exist.

Thoroughly clean floor prior to finish. Buff and clean after each coat and allow drying time as recommended by the finish manufacturer. Strictly follow finish manufacturer's application instructions.

3.03 PROTECTION

Protect floor during and after installation from damage with heavy Kraft paper or other suitable covering.
