New Third Floor Suite: Creative Code Compliance

Third floors are a problem in Madison, at least until we change our zoning codes (a process already begun as of 2008). The original restrictions were intended to encourage homeowners to reinvest in their homes, but over-zealous implementation had the opposite of the intended effect. This family's home was close enough to meeting the restrictions that we were able to apply some creative designing to secure the permits. Within is a whole new master bedroom suite; from the front (below) all that shows is a new dormer.

The rear view however gives a more complete picture. The dormer there shows the "saddlebags" that provide extra floor space and house the whole-house cooling fan system.
